Montgomery County is a portion of the territory formerly belonging to Bond County, by act of the Legislature approved February 12, 1821. By this act the boundaries are as follows: Beginning at the southeast corner of section twenty-four, in township seven north, and range two west of the third principal meridian ; thence west eighteen miles to the southwest corner of section nineteen, in township seven north, and range five west; thence west to the southwest corner of said township ; thence north to the northwest corner of township twelve north; thence east twenty-four miles to the northeast corner of township twelve north, and range two west ; thence south to the beginning.
The persons conspicuous as the earliest settlers was the old Revolutionary soldier, Harris Reavis, Henry Pyatt, John Levi, and Aaron Casey, Joseph and Charles Wright, John and Henry Hill, William McDavid, Jesse Johnson, Henry Sears, Easton Whitten, James Card, and John Russell.
