The Bill Huss Chapel Cemetery, also known as the Huss Chapel Cemetery, is reached from Urbana by taking Route 4 (Philo Road) to Route 4A to Deers Station, then continuing east one mile, then north a short distance. The chapel which gave it its name is no longer there. It stands on high ground, and is not now entirely fenced. It seems to have some care, but is not in very good condition.
The cemetery was first platted in 1881, but dates show there were burials previous to that time. Possibly, some graves were transferred from the Old Huss Cemetery, a mile and a half distant on the west bank of the Salt Fork.
Many pioneer names are represented there. Among them is that of Jefferson Huss, who with his brother, James, came to the Salt Fork timber about 1830, and entered land a short distance above Sidney. His sons were Wesley W. and James R. Another prominent name is that of Moses B. Deere, 1826-1900. He was the eldest son of Larkin Deere, who came to Champaign County in 1830 from Kentucky. When Moses was only twenty years old, his father died, and the support of the family of ten children fell upon him. Despite lack of time for formal education, he made a success of life. For many years he was the largest shipper of live stock from Champaign County. He married Harriet Thomas, daughter of Joseph Thomas, in 1850, and they had twelve children, four of whom died in infancy.
