Counties of Cumberland, Jasper and Richland, Illinois

The process involved in publishing the “Counties of Cumberland, Jasper and Richland, Illinois. Historical and biographical” included employing a large team to gather materials from various sources, including carefully preserved letters, scraps of manuscript, printed fragments, memoranda, and public records. The county’s newspaper files were also thoroughly reviewed, and former citizens residing outside the counties were consulted to verify the information gathered.

Despite the overwhelming amount of conflicting statements, discrepancies, and fallible and incomplete public documents, the publishers aimed to produce a record of events with some degree of accuracy. They gave preference to the preponderance of authority while acknowledging the existence of errors and their inability to furnish a perfect history. They believe that they have fulfilled their promises and provided as accurate a work as the nature of the surroundings would permit.

The biographical sketches incorporated in the book were obtained from the persons whom they represent, and the publishers disclaim any responsibility for their general tenor. They are confident that just and thoughtful people will appreciate their efforts and recognize the importance of preserving the valuable historical matters of the counties and biographies of many of their citizens that would otherwise have been lost.
